Failure, frustration, or disappointment in life is a common cause of depression.

Young people sometimes sink into depression when they make poor grades or meet with failure in school or college. there are even cases of students committing suicide on account of their poor showing in an examination. It is good to remember that failures are an integral part of life. Life is compounded of failures and successes. There are many geniuses in the world whose early school records are rather poor. When a person has a strong determination or the right attitude toward life, failures can be stepping stones to success. In fact, we learn more from failures than from successes. After the initial shock of failure is absorbed, a person emerges stronger and wiser. He is better equipped to accomplish the goal o life by reason of a better understanding of his own points of strength and weakness and also of a more realistic grasp of the difficulties and opportunities inherent in a given situation.

Failure in school is sometimes too depressing to students because exaggerated importance is attached to the results of school examinations. The attitude of the family or of persons in authority may cause strong feelings of shame and distress to be associated with sholastic failure. But it is good to remember that school results are not the final index to one's intelligence and latent possibilities. A student who fails in scholastic pursuits may shine in business enterprise or creative action. There is always the question of the hidden talents of the individual. There is the need for judicious selection of one's individual lines of self-development.
