David Deida's message
has already been covered by us here,
in An
Introduction to David Deida.
He has also been praised and endorsed by Marianne
Williamson, among others.
A few additional points:
The Audience for David Deida:
Who His Message Generally Appeals To
Deida, in the opinion of the LiveReal Agents, is one of the highest-caliber thinkers featured in this section, and has a rare vision for the "evolution" of relationships and where we can hope to evolve in the future.
However, the types of individuals his message is geared to and will appeal to is very specific.
The primary audience for Deida's message are those who have essentially already been "through it all" in regards to "working on oneself" in the various relationship approaches.
Meaning, if one is working with issues of codependency (Mellody, Beattie, Forward, etc), or is focused primarily on keeping a marriage together (Gottman, Weiner-Davis), or is working on addressing and resolving childhood issues or emotional processing (Hendrix, Masters, Welwood), or doing general self-improvement and personal growth work . . . then one is advised to keep doing that - and probably stay away from Deida's - until one is no longer satisfied with it.
When you feel you have "outgrown" all of these approaches - all of which present, in Deida's view, very good work which is a very good idea to work on - then, and only then, is one particularly well-suited for the message he presents.
This type of work mentioned above is regarded as "First-Stage" and "Second-Stage" work in Deida's view; therefore, he prefers to focus on what he considers to be the next stage of cultural evolution which he defines as . . . you guessed it . . . the "Third-Stage."
Basically, if one digs very deeply into Deida's work before this time, they will most likely feel offended or will misunderstand most of what Deida's message is.
Further, Deida's message is essentially a spiritual teaching that incorporates relationships and sexuality. His message of spirituality is congruent with the Perennial Philosophy which is "non-denominational" or encompasses the core of all religions, in this sense, his speaking and manner of presentation would be more familiar to those who have studied, say, Buddhism, than, for example, everyday popular Christianity. In other words, if one is familiar and comfortable with such words or phrases as "consciousness" or "opening to God," then his message will be more easily understood.
It has also been said that Deida's message is primarily useful to people who are essentially dissatisfied with their lives in a fundamental way, and who are searching for "more."
This is a fairly specific audience, but often the most high-caliber thinkers are not those who are most easily understood. And we, the LiveReal Editors, see David Deida as one thinker who is definitely worth understanding.
