John Gottman Talk about it: Books: In the experience of your illustrious LiveReal Agents, John Gottman has done a lot of great work. He is a pioneer in bringing a rigorous, verifiable scientific outlook to the study of relationships, while being one of the few academic intellectuals whose work is relevant and useful for those outside of academia, which has made him a marquee name in the popular arena. We recommend his work for very skeptical scientific types as "the best that science has to offer, and describe his work here. However, as we describe in that article, often a biggest strength is also one's greatest weakness - in this case, being scientifically rigorous also tends to make one more and more narrowly focused, and less likely to work, out in the messy realities of day-to-day life. Further, his "specialty" is relationships, and relationships alone. The only problem with this approach is that relationships are not an isolated factor in life - and, ironically enough, "relationship problems" often cannot be solved through merely working on the relationship problems. Meaning, for example, if one partner is an alcoholic, or abusive, or feeling hemmed-in by the partnership . . . or is depressed, or neurotic, or cheats on their spouse . . . often, these issues create the relationship problems . . . but can't be solved by "working on the relationship." As good as Gottman's work may be, one cannot look at relationships within a kind of "closed-bubble," and not work from an overall single and comprehensive model of human nature (as if such a thing actually existed . . . well, OK, your brave LiveReal Agents are actually working on it . . .).
