Where Spiritual Giants Duke It Out
H. H. the Dalai Lama
Taking Hits
From
different spiritual traditions:
The form of Buddhism that H.H. the Dalai Lama practices and teaches
(the Gelugpa lineage) is a scholarly, monastic tradition that is
ultimately concerned with study and specific discipline of conduct
according to regimented rules of thought and behavior. It's a highly
masculine, extremely philosophical practice. In other words, you
don't see the Dalai Lama doing a lot of ecstatic dancing.
However, other forms of Buddhist teaching exist (some would say
"higher" forms, and I would agree) that emphasize *living* the Buddha
nature in a more spontaneous, whole-bodily way, a way that embraces
and shines through "feminine" light as well as masculine consciousness.
"Crazy Wisdom" teachers like Chogyam Trungpa are examples of these
forms of Buddhism."
(This is one viewpoint that parallels the perspective of David
